ABOUT

TRUMPETOLOGY is an ensemble of 5 trumpets and rhythm section led by emerging jazz trumpet player, arranger, and composer, Walter Simonsen.

Trumpetology’s exploration of landmark jazz recordings are as accessible as they are recognizable, but progressive in their unconventional ensemble configuration and sound.  This is Trumpetology, offers a fresh perspective on the way American jazz is presented.  The group’s debut album release features tracks with 5 trumpets: Walter Simonsen, James Blackwell, Brian Owen, Tim Gill, and Brian Mantz or Cameron Summers and 2 rhythm sections: Adam Bravo (p), Alex Frank (b), Adam Alesi (d) & Kait Dunton (p), Cooper Appelt (b), and Jake Reed (d).

Jazz enthusiasts will hear tunes from well-known recordings, melodies they recognize from famous improvised solos all notable in the jazz repertoire. The trumpets perform harmonized passages of legendary trumpet solos, such as Kenny Dorham: Prince Albert, Chet Baker: Autumn Leaves, Miles Davis: So What & Milestones, Lee Morgan:  Sidewinder.  This is Trumpetology is more than an anthology of famous solos; the arrangements are carefully crafted to feature each trumpeter’s individual voice as well as the powerful rhythm section.   READ MORE HERE.

NEWS & WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

“Walt Simonsen has come up with a clever and swinging rendition of jazz classics orchestrated for a trumpet section and rhythm that sounds terrific! The playing and writing are first rate.”

— Bob Mintzer, Saxophonist, Composer, Educator, WDR Conductor

“Walter Simonsen’s Trumpetology is a very fun jazz listen. 5 trumpeters with an acoustic rhythm section play jazz standards (and 1 rapper). This is not another “Chase” style group. Arranged by Walter, the emphasis is on great trumpet ensemble and jazz solos by all the members of the group. In addition to a few “Supersax” style treatments of some classic trumpet solos, the cd features many new treatments of compositions written by great jazz trumpeters. I find Simonsen’s arrangement of Freddie Hubbard’s Sky Dive to be a better fit for the tune than the chart on Freddie’s album. If you like jazz trumpet playing, you’re going to love this cd.”

— Jay Saunders, Lead Trumpet - Stan Kenton, DFW Studio Trumpet, UNT Professor of Trumpet, Director - 1 O'Clock Lab Band

“The trumpet world should be especially grateful that Walter Simonsen had the vision to put together a recording project of this magnitude. The arrangements are wonderful, the playing tight, and the solos beautifully shaped and executed. Seems a group like this would be a natural at jazz festivals and brass conferences.”

— Bill Bing, Trumpet Player, Educator, Director of Bands, CalTech

“Love the way it was written... a great tribute.”

— Jazz Access Podcast, sponsored by AllAboutJazz.com

“Trumpetology is a shining example about what is good about music. A beautiful marriage of technique and soul.”

— Maxwell Dartey, host Due Diligence, KPFK 90.7FM
